The State of Amazonas is Brazil's largest state. The state was named after the river Amazonas; the world's largest and longest. The city of Manaus, capital of the State of Amazonas, is located 1,500 kilometers inland from the Atlantic Ocean, in the heart of Brazil's Amazon rain forest. The city sits along the Rio Negro River and Solimoes River. Manaus was settled in 1699 and in 1850s it became the capital of the State of Amazonas. The city became a major urban center during the rubber boom years, between 1890 and 1913. The visitor will still find a number of mansions, parks, and monuments, built during Manaus's "Belle Epoque" period. For instance, world famous Opera House, Palacio Rio Negro, Municipal Market, and the Palace of Justice are good examples of the city's majestic past.
Today, the city has close to 1.5 million people. It has a sophisticated and vibrant cosmopolitan lifestyle. Manaus has a vibrant cultural life, hosting the internationally famous Opera Festival, at the Opera House, built during the rubber boom years. The State of Amazonas is also home to the largest number of Native Brazilians, making the city a melting pot of cultures and traditions. The "Centro Cultural dos Povos da Amazonia – CCPA", next to the Comfort Inn Hotel, showcases the different Native Brazilian ethnic groups' culture and handcrafts. There you can buy authentic handcrafts made by local native artisans and artists.
Manaus is also home to hundreds of multinational companies that manufacture a wide variety of products from cell phones to motorcycles. SUFRAMA, Brazil's federal agency in charge of promoting the sustainable development of the Amazon region, oversees the manufacturing industrial park and the export processing zone located in the city. These companies have become a major source of job creation for the state and have contributed to the preservation of the state's rain forest by providing alternative sources of income for the local population.
The city is also a gateway to the many attractions offered by Brazil's Amazon rain forest (the largest in the world), such as the meeting of the waters, where the Rio Negro meets the Rio Solimoes. The visitor can take advantage of the many city and jungle tours offered as well as its proximity to a number of jungle hotels located a few hours by boat from the city of Manaus. The state also offers to the avid fisherman, one the best fishing experiences in the world.
